THEY SHOOT MUSIC GOES BERLIN
Same concept, other places, other bands. They Shoot Music goes Berlin, at least for a while. We have decided to spend the summer in the buzzling German capital and - like we do in Vienna - explore this place by filming offstage sessions with bands we love. Such as Crystal Stilts from New York, with whom we kick off our Berlin special. Stay tuned for more They Shoot Music videos from Berlin. Of course we continue filming in Vienna as well. We are close to 100 sessions and there's still a lot more to come.

Magnolia Electric Co
Jason Molina, singer and songwriter of Magnolia Electric Co. and – earlier – of Songs: Ohia, turned down our suggestion for the location right away. The reason was more a misunderstanding than an actual difference of views between us and him: when we started talking about some nice graffiti close to the venue, that could serve as a good visual extra in the video, he just shook his head and said: “Come on guys, that’s too obvious, too cliché.” ...more ...

Sophia
When listening to Sophia records, you wouldn’t imagine Robin Proper-Sheppard as an entertaining, self-deprecating man who likes to play with the attention he gets when he’s on stage or a camera points at him. The music he writes is heartfelt, sad and very personal, but in between the songs he jokes and tells stories about himself taking everything too seriously. Yet as soon as he starts strumming one of his songs, he immerses into his own worl...more ...

The Rifles
We meet Joel and Luke from The Rifles in the afternoon before their show at Berlin Festival. It’s a pity that we aren’t allowed to get out on the airfield of Tempelhof airport – where the festival takes place –, so we take the other exit and head out for a walk alongside the huge building. Under a big tree in front of the prison-like Tempelhof walls the two lads stop, grab their guitars and start into a beautiful acoustic version of “Robin Hoo...more ...

Noah And The Whale
“This is better going to be a good session”, Charlie banters when struggling to climb the fence with his tight trousers and sharp boots. He and his bandmate Tom Hobden came about to play an acoustic set of two songs from their recent album “The First Days Of Spring” on disused train tracks behind the venue of their first Berlin show. It’s a late September afternoon with the wind howling in one’s ears, when Charlie raises his sonorous and at th...more ...

Boom Pam
Eventually also the greatest fun comes to an end. Some ill-humoured clerk cuts off Boom Pam’s morning-after outdoor set “just ten seconds before the end of the show.” The band from Tel Aviv bundle up their stuff and stroll back through the Sportpark to their accommodation in Berlin. What can be imagined as a self-declared “alcohol soaked wedding party ecstasy” – as written on their homepage -, still develops an exhilarating charm vibrant with ...more ...

Kissogram
Each year at the end of the summer the Summerize concert night, that stages musicians from Berlin, takes place at Kulturbrauerei. Kissogram have just finished their soundcheck for their late-night show when we meet them for the video shoot. Founded in 1999 as a two-man project by the Germans Jonas Poppe and Sebastian Dassé, the Englishman Joe Dilworth (who is apart from his job as a drummer also working in photography) joined them later on. Ou...more ...

The Dodos
Since the last time we have tried to set up a video shoot with The Dodos in December 2008 the band has grown to three members, recorded and released a new album (“Time To Die”) and then hit the road again for several touring months. Singer Meric Long, drummer Logan Kroeber and vibraphone player Keaton Snyder seem not to take any breaks. When we meet in the afternoon of a nice September day in Berlin they have just finished soundcheck and are s...more ...

Port O Brien
After almost two years of filming bands it now starts to happen that we randomly run into someone we already know from a previous shoot (remember Wavves-Ryan surprisingly popping out from the Vivian Girls tourbus and commenting during the videos …). This time it is Two Gallants’ drummer Tyson Vogel’s turn. He joined Port O’Brien for their short European summer tour and furthermore helps out with audio recording during our video shoot by creati...more ...

Micachu and The Shapes
We catch Micachu and The Shapes right when they arrive at the airport-venue of the Berlin Festival. There is no need to get rid of their luggage, they say, so after drummer Mark found a suitable lurid green dustbin to beat on, we head fully packed to the bicycle-lined forecourt of disused Tempelhof airport. The festival gates have already opened and people keep flocking to the entrance, while Micachu and The Shapes set up some of their home ma...more ...

Crystal Stilts
Last time Brooklyn-based Crystal Stilts were touring Europe, their fifth man – Kyle Forester, the fair-haired guy on the keyboard – was missing. Now it’s his turn to embrace in a good-mooded and talkative way every aspect of tour life. Not only does he play the entertainer at their show at Bang Bang Club when it comes to the more or less obligatory talk to the audience, while singer Brad Hargett prefers to stay on the aloof-side; i...more ...
