Smashed Birds

Devoted followers of these pages may know her from our session with Seabear four years ago, who entertained Turkish marketers in Vienna with sweet Icelandic indie tunes. This time we meet Sóley Stefánsdóttir in Hamburg, right after her afternoon show at Dockville Festival, while working off her heavy press schedule. Our quick excursion leads us to a windy open space by a river arm of the Elbe, with some industrial scenery in the background. On the way Sóley talks about her favourite Hot Chip concert (the headliner of the day at Dockville) in a record shop during Iceland Airwaves a couple of years ago before they released their first album. Then she starts into “Smashed Birds”, a beautifully fragile song from her own first – and very successful – album “We Sink”. The time when you can catch Sóley doing an off-venue record shop gig might be over soon as well.
