Secession

Vienna’s Secession is a world-renowned museum for contemporary art and especially Art Nouveau. It was built after plans from Joseph Maria Olbrich in 1898 and was the home of the eponymous group of artists around Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser that rejected conservatism, traditionalism and historicism in architecture and arts. Today the Secession building is still a magnificent example of Art Nouveau architecture and houses temporary and permanent exhibitions (Gustav Klimt’s Beethoven frieze!). However, it’s a shame that it is situated amidst a heavy traffic island and has to face the home of the gambling corporation Novomatic.
