Heiligenstädter Kirche St. Michael
We hardly ever get out of the city to Vienna’s 19th district, Döbling even though it is beautifully located next to the Wienerwald and has a long tradition of winegrowing. With its grand mansions it is a rather rich neighbourhood, yet with Karl-Marx-Hof also one of the biggest and best known Gemeindebauten is situated here. However, this time we are not coming to Döbling for a filming session at a Heuriger but for one at St. Michael’s Kirche in Heiligenstadt. The former Gothic church got destroyed during the Ottoman wars and was refurbished in the Baroque style in 1723. Yet at the end of the 19th century the building was so derelict that it had to be rebuild and thus finally turned out neo-Gothic. For a Catholic church the church appears pleasantly puristic, so that your attention is immediately attracted by the imposing altar illuminated through the stained-glass windows.
